Service Area, System, Plant

Service Area

The District’s boundaries include the territory consisting of Key Largo, including all lands east of Tavernier Creek, including Tavernier, Key Largo, and Cross Key, with the exception of Ocean Reef, all located in Monroe County.

System

In most of the island of Key Largo a vacuum collection system is the most cost effective method for wastewater collection. In some remote areas a gravity collection system that pumps directly into the US1 force main is the most economical alternative. A vacuum sewer system uses the differential pressure between atmospheric pressure and a partial vacuum maintained in the piping network and vacuum station collection vessel. This differential pressure allows a central vacuum station to collect the wastewater of several thousand individual homes. Vacuum sewers take advantage of available natural slope in the terrain and are most economical in flat sandy soils with high ground water. systems are completely contained and will continue to function normally during a power outage with power from a standby generator located at the vacuum stations.

Plant

KLWTD has won the prestigious Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s 2013 Award of Excellence and the Florida Rural Water Association’s Medium Wastewater Plant of the Year for 2013 and 2014.

In 2010 KLWTD placed it’s 2.3 mgd (million gallons per day) regional treatment plant into service. This facility was designed to meet the Advanced Wastewater Treatment Standards (AWT). In 2015 KLWTD expanded its plant operations to 3.45 mgd.
